In the process of working on a separate online project, I came across the code for the translation widget in a blog that's been around for quite some time. Normally I am quite narrow in my translation efforts to other more formally codified languages such as the list in the side bar, let alone the additional languages available through a translation service. My knowledge set has enough trouble translating sound to text (as in the translation of these sounds running through my brain telling my fingers where to go in response) let alone ensuring there is minimal loss of message in the translation effort.
Latin is a Lost Art Legend in which many public schools (at least in the United States) has dropped the language as an option in school in exchange for languages more in common practice, especially the spoken languages in action. However, Latin is a language in which all current terminology assignments have some sort of relationship with Ancient History, with "ancient" being relative of course. Software can become outdated within a matter of hours, if not sometimes days and if I mention the 5 1/2 floppy disk, then culturally speaking, I am far more ancient than outdated with that particular remembrance of the computing revolution.
Anyway, as I began with explaining my purpose behind originally exploring translation methods as offered by a variety of services, I became curious about how my own content was being translated rather than simply trying to respond to a question being asked in another language.
The phrase "Lorem Ipsum" has historically been used as a placeholder in a publishing context, filler text basically and there's even auto-generators available online. Some sites provide auto-default Lorem Ipsum materials while free templates use the language to display the suggestion of "Just imagine your text here" without actually having to outright say it (damn that stealth marketing, right?)
First off, how absolutely wild to see all of the dates altered into letters rather than numbers! It was also quite an experience to see which words didn't change and what changes happened to what strings.
So anyway, when I came across the first company translated into a Lorem Ipsum formation, it served up a good chuckle I thought I'd share here as a sideband-type note rather than keeping it to myself.
This demonstration was created using Google Translate and a site claiming TransExperts.com is/was the data set provider for my results through accessing their WordTran and NeuroTran programs. As you will be able to note for yourself, the Google Translate results contain an eyebrow-raising percentage of Lorem Ipsum placement while TransExperts.com has none. Now I personally flunked out of Spanish in my schooling day and I never took Latin, so to an undereducated individual such as myself, it's tough to tell which translation is the most "accurate"...especially since the act of translation is relative to begin with.
Just think of all of the slang variations attached to the English language! "Totally awesome, dude's and dudettes" may be an ancient derivative, but it was commonplace in American culture in the 80's and although it translated in an identical formation into Latin doesn't mean the the cultural attachment to the phrase will follow.
